Happy birthday to Oakwood School - we are 35! Since it opened in September 1989, over 45,000 students have been through the doors as well as four Headteachers and thousands of staff. The building has grown and been added to over the years and the work continues. And that was that. The end of term is here and school is finished for the Summer. It has been a year of highs, including work on the Astro pitch finally getting underway, and lows, including work on the Astro pitch grinding to a halt because of such awful weather. Thankfully it has now restarted and by the time the start of term rolls around it should be finished! Of course, there has been lots of other stuff going on, but that’s school life for you. Mr Gladstone’s first year as Headteacher ended with “the best sports day in 17 years”. Relax, enjoy the break and we’ll be back briefly on GCSE results day. On Thursday 13th June Mrs Ebert and Miss Jackson took the Horrible Historians to watch the show Rotten Rulers at @thehawthcrawley. The students were brilliantly behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the tales of awful kings and queens. There was much laughter (especially at the Gong Farmers) and the audience participation from Oakwood was off-the-scale! Anjali and Alfie ended up on stage being identified as 17th century witches and reading a tongue twister with the microphone and everyone joined in the song at the end. Horrible Histories club is every Friday lunchtime in G16.

On Sunday 9th June two of our Year 9 students attended the memorial ceremony for DDay, accompanied by Mr Tunstill. Both boys represented the school admirably wearing school uniform and reading to a large crowd of adults outside. The poems selected were ‘Normandy’ and ‘Ranville’ both by Juno veteran Cyril Crain. In school we have reflected on the 80th anniversary events by having activities in tutor time, listening to veterans speaking and reflecting on the events.
