Key Stage 3

At Oakwood we believe that creativity is a core skill which every child should develop. The Key Stage 3 Art curriculum encourages pupils to investigate, experiment, observe, record and develop their learning into a unique personal outcome.  Students learn through practical investigation of materials and processes supported by contextual study of artists and makers from different times and cultures.  Student have one hour long lesson a week and five independent homework tasks to support each project.  Student’s work takes the form of a journal or sketchbook which students use for home and class work and a wide range of two and three dimensional final outcomes.

In Year 7 we focus on the formal elements of Art, Craft and Design.  These are the building blocks which your child will use to create an image or object and also the qualities that we ask them to analyse when discussing their own and others work.

In Year 8 we build on this foundation by introducing images and artefacts from other cultures and range of different materials, techniques and process.  Your child will be encouraged to experiment and explore the huge variety of human creativity throughout time and around the world using it as inspiration for their own unique outcomes.

In Year 9 we begin to prepare your child for how they might use and understand visual language in real world settings.  We introduce art movements and discuss the importance of the context and purpose of an artwork or image. Students are introduced to some of the many careers they could have in the creative industries and the GCSE courses which we offer in Year 10 and 11.

Key Stage 4

We offer two different endorsements of the Edexcel GCSE Art and Design course, Art & Craft and Photography.  This allows students to specialise and select the materials and processes that suit them best.

Art & Craft focuses upon drawing, painting, printmaking, mixed media, relief and three dimensional work with the option to incorporate other media if the student prefers.  Photography focuses upon creative darkroom or analogue printing, digital photography, Photoshop, other forms of photographic printmaking and can be developed into other lens and screen based media.

Both endorsements are assessed in two bodies of work which are produced over the two years and presented as an exhibition.  The work is assessed by the student’s teacher and then moderated by a visiting moderator at the exhibition.

Unit 1 – Portfolio – A number of projects grouped together worth 60% of the GCSE.

Unit 2 – Externally Set Assignment – A single project culminating in 10 hours sustained work and worth 40% of the GCSE.

The work is structured in a similar way to Key Stage 3 in a journal which builds towards a number of final outcomes.  However students now have three lessons and an independent homework task per week.

The courses are supported by a number of trips to London galleries and guided photoshoots.

Rationale

Year 11

Topic Area/Key Question

Working in response to an Externally Set Assignment from previous year students produce a small project focused on improving the range of the students portfolio while practicing the skills that will be needed for the externally set assignment.

The externally set assignment is a project from the exam board which students working with their teacher have approximately 10 weeks to plan or prepare.

Students will start the Summer term by completing the final outcome in a sustained study of ten hours.

The work will then be presented as an exhibition alongside the portfolio and all journals for external moderation.

Students will be encouraged to develop their creative autonomy to create personal and unique outcomes.

Students will independently create a small project to complete the portfolio and a larger project based on an externally set brief.

Artists, History or Context AO1 - Based on a teacher-selected past paper, students will engage with artists selected from a list of appropriate options. This gives students more creative autonomy, working towards having to self-select artists independently for their external assignment

Technique/ Media AO2:

- Teacher-led workshops to demonstrate the creative experimental process and aid students in making their own creative decisions when it comes to planning their final piece

Observing & Recording AO3:

- Teacher-led workshops to refine key skills and processes and add sophistication to student work.

Final Outcome AO4:

- Students will complete a internally set assessment based on their planning and practice this term

Artists, History or Context AO1 - Artist Research and response based on the theme provided by the exam board and through tutorials with teacher

Technique/ Media AO2:

- Students will have built up to a mostly independent development process, including which media they need to practice. This will also be based on the theme of the paper and supported by tutorials with teacher

Observing & Recording AO3:

- Students will continue to practice their recording based on the theme, and have autonomy to choose their subject matter according to the development of their project

Final Outcome AO4:

- Planning and discussing with teacher for the external assignment

Final Outcome - AO4

The final sustained study is the culmination of the course and students are encouraged to stretch themselves with a high emphasis on student independence and the need to be reflective and self aware.

Exhibition – Assessment and Moderation

Students are then responsible for hanging and the presentation of their part of the exhibition ready for the external moderators visit.

Assessment

At the end of project 2, the coursework mark for Unit 1 (portfolio) will be finalised and shared with students. As both a mark out of 72 and a forecast 1-9 grade.

Project 3 is an externally set project. Projects will be marked on the GCSE marking matrix at the end of the project and will be shared with students as a raw mark out of 72.

Final exhibition for external moderation.

Literacy focus

Students will need to read and understand the externally set assignment and respond accordingly. Students will write longer passages using art keywords to compare and contrast their own work and the work of artists and cultures. Students will be encouraged to communicate personal ideas and intent, as well as reflect on personal practice.
